One of the better ones for catching you up for the big finale that's coming, and to show why it's done the way it is in universe, which is one of those things you have to be VERY careful with in shows that have a modern setting. It's why Doctor Who keeps running into weird things with its setting sometimes. Ooh, or that time the lady in Power Rangers told a little girl there's no such thing as monsters. And not like, under the bed ones, she's telling the lady, who is the only authority figure she can contact, that an actual monster is wandering around, and loudly announcing its plan to hurt people. And this is a season in the main universe AFTER In Space's invasion of Earth, and in a city protected by a team of known Rangers, no secret identities or anything.

Hey, so, I'm the one who requested this episode. Why you ask? Back when Chuck reviewed the _Next Generation_ episode "Shades of Grey," (a clip show) he went on about how there were lots of better, more interesting ways to make a clip show, and that what ended up on screen was bad. Now, I knew _Stargate_ has several clips shows, and they often try to do interesting things with them. So I asked Chuck to review a _Stargate_ clip show that he thought was good, to show that the concept of a clip show can be done well.

This episode makes me wonder: What did the Enterprise do during the Dominion War?

Of all the clip shows to chose in this series, we get this one instead of Claudia Black proposing they make the show more like Farscape.

Stargate: an annoying amount of clip shows, but at least some of them were executed very well. Another thing lost to streaming. Aside from saving money, a clip show serves to catch people up when they came in late and syndicated reruns are years off. Kinda pointless in the bing model.

Year of Hell shouldn't have been a single episode. It should have been the running theme through a whole season.

UK and France put on their clown shoes, get told where to sit and to be silent while adults speak. Russia is there so everyone can keep eye on them to make sure that some goauld isn't the next highest bidder for power. China is very serious and... China brought its own clown shoes, no thanks thank you very much. USA guy is there to make sure that the survival of the human race doesn't cost the american oligarchs their third yacht or mansion. Go team humans!

That spiderman clip was my reaction when i first aaw that scene as a child when this episode was first aired.

Sadly, this episode is a microcosm of why we haven't gotten a modern Stargate series. It would be difficult to have action and adventure when a 10 episode run would be mostly humanity bitching with one another for 9 episodes and then a cliffhanger.

Whenever I watch this episode I always imagine how entertaining it’d be if it had been a crossover with Doctor Who, and the British delegate had been the Brigadier. Just imagine how jaded/nonchalant he’d’ve been hearing about how another alien invasion is imminent, “Oh who is it this time; the Daleks? The Cybermen? The Sontarans? The Zygons? The…” 😂

The idea of goauld ground invasion is so fkn funny, they are world ending threat as long as they stay in orbit but these guys would get run over in traffic right after disembarking.

Ah, this era of Stargate SG-1 makes me nostalgic for that time western media portrayed Russians as evil and incompetent. As opposed to today, where the Russians portray themselves as evil and incompetent.

I remember the "Next Time, on Staaaaaar Trek, TheNextGeneration" (Ernie Anderson was GAWD on those promos) promo for this episode and it had unfinished footage without effects. Troi standing there screaming, "He's blinding me!" for no apparent reason. Almost made me not want to watch the episode. You're right, how did they get seven seasons, four movies, and three spin offs from this garbage?

the only thing I'll give this episode is the makeup effects on the 2 new alien races from the beginning have makeup effect that's more elaborate than a forehead thingy or funny nose

But why a flintlock? I keep coming back to wondering why a gun that doesn't fit the costume, the surroundings, the weapons used by enemy and player alike....

Eventually we'll get past all the season 1 TNG. Somehow. Some way. We will get over this hill.

If anything Chuck is downplaying silliness at the end with Tasha reporting about the delegates. Not only is one of them missing, IIRC one of them was *eaten* by the other. And Picard and River just react with a shrug? Can you imagine an episode where the Klingon ambassador eats the Romulan ambassador on Picard’s watch, and it’s a B Plot left unresolved at the end of the episode? A major diplomatic incident happened while you guys were chasing a lightning monster around the ship. This is not the time to shrug and say “oh well, ain’t life in space crazy?”

I recall liking Mr. Singh and being sad that he wouldn't be coming back.

Producer: "Say, that Marc Alaimo was a pretty cool guy, wasn't he?" Director: "Yes, very professional. Didn't even mind all that makeup he had to wear." Producer: "We should consider bringing him back for another role. He could become a new name in the franchise." Director: "Yes, on that subject, he asked NOT to be credited." Producer: "Oh, why's that?" Director: "Because he said this episode was terrible and he never wants to be associated with it." Producer: "....OK, now we DEFINITELY have to get him back. He has all the makings of a star."

2017: "Wow, it would be really nice to not have to worry about the stupidity on display in the upper levels of political parties in a few years... 2020 is gonna be great to get that done." 2024: "Well I spent the last few years dealing with the sheer egotism that lead to a generation defining pandemic and wondering when Russia will learn it's lesson about invading Ukraine. And yet I'm still dealing with the lot. Meanwhile reality is still trying to find ways to out do satire."

I'll get lunch at Chick-fil-A today. For the cows.

This episode does at least give us that fantastic Worf electrocution scene.

Season 1 of TNG is kind of like a toddler. Sometimes it has genuinely good moments. Sometimes it produces a crude crayon drawing that you have to pretend you like and hang on the fridge for a week. Sometimes it throws a temper tantrum and breaks half the stuff in the house. Sometimes it walks into the middle of the living room and takes a dump on the carpet.

Honestly I really enjoy this episode. I loved tos so these early tng episodes just feel like a nice transition to me.

Yep, it's annoying that everyone acts so insufferable about the alien delegates' behavior.
